Yosemite Backup FAQs

01. What are the system requirements for Yosemite Backup?

  • Required: 512 MB RAM required above operating system and application requirements
  • Recommended: 1024 MB RAM (or more for better performance) above operating system and application requirements
  • Virtual Memory Recommendations: 20 MB above Windows recommended size for total paging file size (total for all disk volumes)
  • 400 MB hard disk space required after Microsoft Windows is installed (typical installation)
  • The Yosemite Backup Catalog requires additional space. Yosemite recommends that you select a different hard drive other than the default when you install Yosemite Backup on the machine that will serve as the Master Server. A disk drive with at least an additional 20 GB is recommended
  •
    • Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition
    • Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition
    • Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server
    • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server
    • Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional
    • Microsoft Windows Small Business Server 2003
    • Windows XP
    • Windows 2000 Professional
  • Pentium-Class Processor or better
  • 400 MB hard disk space required after Microsoft Windows is installed (typical installation)
  • 800 x 600 Resolution, 256 colors
  • Internet Explorer 6 or higher
  • Static or DHCP Internet Protocol V4 address
  • Supports all major storage hardware technologies and requires at least one storage media drive and/or library and the appropriate controller card

02. What is a flexible media rotation?
Jobs can be scheduled to run as frequently as every minute or as infrequently as only once or on demand. Media rotation schemes let you determine the best method for re-using media. You can re-use media as frequently as often asyou want or never. You determine how long you want to retain data on your media.

03. What is a Virtual Library?
A Virtual Library emulates a physical tape library. A Virtual Library can include one or more emulated tape drives, storage slots in which to store virtual media, and emulated robotics to load and unload virtual media.

04. How do I configure a Virtual Library?

1. Select Wizards from the Favorites desk bar.
2. Run the D2D Device wizard and click Next to proceed through the screens of the wizard.
3. When prompted to do so, name the Virtual Library or you may accept the default name.
4. On the Configuration page, set up the Virtual Library as follows:
  • Select a storage folder (to which the Yosemite Backup user has rights) by browsing to a disk drive that contains sufficient disk space to back up your data. Try to select storage folders on a different disk drive than the disk drive that contains the data you are backing up. This enhances performance and insures data recovery if the source data disk fails. To select a folder location on another system, you must use a Universal Naming Convention (UNC) qualified name. A UNC qualified name has the following format:
    \\Computer_name\share\file_path
    For example: \\My_Server\Share_1\My_Data

  • Select the number of virtual tape drives (up to a maximum of 100) you want to include in the Virtual Library. Having multiple virtual tape drives, or better, multiple VLD’s on multiple disks, can improve performance by allowing multiple backup jobs to write simultaneously to multiple targets.
  • Select the number of virtual storage slots (up to a maximum of 1200) you want to include in the Virtual Library. Each virtual storage slot is capable of holding backup data in a virtual tape cartridge that is created automatically by the Virtual Library. As each virtual storage slot consumes resources, Yosemite Backup recommends that you have a few more virtual storage slots than are necessary for your selected media rotation to allow for quick one off jobs
  • If you have a D2D2Ne™ license, you may set up a copy policy for the Virtual Library. A copy policy determines whether or not the backups stored on virtual media will be copied to other devices. For more information on this feature, refer to the User’s Guide and Technical Reference. If you use D2D2Ne for backup jobs with split spanning enabled, do not configure the Virtual Library to limit the capacity of a single virtual tape cartridge (this will create excessive copying of media under the D2D2Ne copy policy)
5. Click Finish once you have completed the wizard.

05. Does Yosemite Backup support tape-to-tape copying?
Yes. You can create extra sets of backup media. You might use these extra sets of media as redundant backups for offsite storage. You can create duplicates of your media any time, or you can schedule a job to occur at regular intervals. To prepare duplicate backup media, use the Copy Media wizard from the Favorites desk bar to select the source and destination media and schedule the job.

06. How do I perform a disk-to-disk backup?
Yosemite Backup supports advanced disk-to-disk (D2D) backups through the use of a Virtual Library. A Virtual Library emulates a physical tape library. To set up a disk-to-disk backup job first create a Virtual Library and then configure your backup job to use it instead of other physical devices.

07. How does disk-to-disk (D2D) differ from disk-to-disk-to-any (D2D2Ne)?
D2D allows you to backup to a virtual library. D2D2Ne allows a user to backup to disk and specify whether or not (through copy policy) information from that disk will be copied to another disk or tape. If you have a D2D2Ne license, you may set up a copy policy for the Virtual Library. A copy policy determines whether or not the backups stored on virtual media will be copied to other devices.

08. Does Yosemite Backup support NAS and SAN?
Yes. To share devices on a SAN requires that you purchase Media Server licenses for every server that must utilize the shared devices in the SAN. By default, Yosemite Backup backup jobs automatically select devices to use based on their availability (whether or not they are in use). In a SAN environment, Yosemite Backup automatically recognizes that a single backup device attached to a SAN may be accessible from two or more servers, and treats the device as a single device.

09. Does Yosemite Backup support network printing?

Yes.
1. Add a new printer from the Windows Start menu. For example, in Windows XP, select Printers and Faxes on the Start menu, then select Add a printer.
2. Working through the printer wizard, create a local printer.
3. On the Select a Printer Port screen, select FILE (Print to File).
4. On the Install Printer Software screen, select Generic for the manufacturer and Generic/Text only for the printer.
5. On the Name Your Printer screen, select a unique name for this printer so that it is easy to identify in Yosemite Backup.

01. What are the limitations of Yosemite Backup Unlimited Bundles?
The Unlimited Bundles are available on a per-platform basis or all platforms in the case of Universal Unlimited. The only limitations are:
  • All Client and Media servers must exist in one Backup Domain
  • All servers must be running on a single platform (excluding Universal Unlimited)
  • Bundles do not include Options and Agents such as D2D2Ne,Bare Metal Disaster Recovery or agents for Exchange, or SQL Server
02. Can I restore data with a different file name?
Yes. When the file, directory, or volume to be renamed is selected in the “Selection” tab of your restore job, right-click on it and choose “Rename” from the menu. When you run the restore job, the file, directory, or volume will be restored to the chosen location with the new name. This is useful if you do not want to overwrite an existing file, directory, or volume with the same name.

11. When I install Yosemite Backup on a client machine, I do not see the Master Server (Storage Manager).

The most common reason for not being able to see the Yosemite Backup Master Server from a client machine is that the machine in question is on a different subnet than the Master Server. During installation, you click the “Add” button on the “Host” screen and enter the IP address or subnet of the Master Server. For NetWare or Linux installations, enter the IP address or subnet by clicking the Insert key.
A firewall can also interfere with communication between the clients server and the Master Server. Make sure that any firewall that you are running is not blocking TCP port 3817.
Multiple network cards installed on a machine can also interfere with communication between clients servers and the Master Server. You might need to disable one of the cards while installing Yosemite Backup.

12. Can Yosemite Backup perform cross-platform/cross-file system backup and restore jobs?
Yes, so long as you deselect the “native data stream format” in the Advanced options section on the “Options” tab of the properties of the backup job. You must do this prior to running the backup job and backing up the files. Yosemite Backup is a backup application and any cross-platform restores should be tested to ensure your desired functionality.
