System Requirements

Yosemite Backup is continuously tested on many operating systems and configurations. For the latest list of supported systems, see www.yosemitetech.com/support/os/. For a list of supported devices, see www.yosemitetech.com/TapeWareCommerce2002/certifieddevices.aspx.

To install Yosemite Backup in Windows, you must have Internet Explorer 6.0 or higher.

NOTE: Version Consistency when Using Network Backup. If you are running Yosemite Backup on a network, always install the latest version or service pack on each machine for which you have purchased a license.

You can upgrade to the current release of Yosemite Backup from the following versions:

·        TapeWare 7.0 SP5C

Yosemite Backup installs printable electronic documents onto your computer. You can access them directly from the Start menu: Start, Programs, Yosemite Backup, Documentation, <document name>. Refer to the Windows Start menu entry created for Yosemite Backup to locate these documents:

You can access both the online help system and dynamic help from most Yosemite Backup screens by one of the following methods:

5.      Select Contents from the Help menu at the top of the screen. The main help screen appears.

6.      Press F1. The main help screen appears.

7.      On many screens, click a link in the Dynamic Help command pane. Dynamic help is provided for most tasks available in Yosemite Backup.

Search function in online help is unavailable

This feature is currently not available. As an alternative to searching the entire contents of the online help, locate the PDF versions of the documentation from the Yosemite Backup Start menu. These electronic documents can be searched via Adobe Acrobat Reader.

Additional Information about Split-Span and Restart-Span Mode

Span mode determines how Yosemite Backup will handle an object if the backup media is too full for the object to fit on the current media. The available options are Restart file or Split file.

Restart file: Choose the option to instruct Yosemite Backup to back up objects to media only if they will fit on the media. If an object will not fit on the media, Yosemite Backup will try to back up the object to other media.

Split file: Choose this option to instruct Yosemite Backup to split an object across several media if it will not fit on the current backup media. You must specify a Write mode of Append to first media, overwrite others or Overwrite all media. You cannot recover split-spanned objects during disaster recovery.

Additional Information about Removable Device Classes

A removable device is any fixed disk that is attached over a USB/FireWire bus. Yosemite Backup classifies removable disk devices separately from removable cartridge devices because you might not want to overwrite data on a removable disk device (such as a USB memory stick) by default.

Removable cartridge devices: A removable cartridge device is a device that has a removable, ejectable cartridge.

Removable disk devices: A removable disk device is a device that writes data to a disk with a fixed amount of storage space and does not have a removable cartridge. Some examples are a USB memory stick or FireWire/USB external hard disk.

You can select whether or not to include removable cartridge devices or removable disk devices on the Device/Media page. If you selected Enable Removable Disk Devices for a job using a service pack prior to SP3A, Enable Removable Cartridge Devices will be selected after you upgrade to service pack SP3A.

Additional Information about unplugging devices that are in use

Unplugging a device which is in use by a job will not cause the job to fail. Rather, any objects that have not been processed will be logged as not attempted and the job will complete successfully. Once unplugged, the job cannot reuse that device until the job is run again, even if the device is plugged back in immediately. However, if you start the job again, it will use the device if it has been reconnected.

Additional Information about using Yosemite Backup with firewalls

As Yosemite Backup is a network-based application, firewall usage might interfere with the connections between the Yosemite Backup service and Administrators. To enable network communication, you must open port 3817 for the Yosemite Backup service and Administrators. Refer to your firewall documentation for information on performing this action.

Backup, Verify, and Restore jobs select which devices to use based on both the search path and the set of enabled device classes (tape, virtual, optical, and removable), which the user can select on the Devices page of the job configuration dialog. Some editions of Yosemite Backup are bundled with a class of device that is not enabled by default. As a result, the user had to manually enable the class on each job before the device could be used. As of this service pack, this is no longer necessary for editions bundled with those drives.

Additional Information on Using VSS with Virtual Loaders

With the introduction of VSS to Yosemite Backup, special care should be taken when configuring Virtual Loader Storage Pools to avoid needless performance problems. Storage pools should be allocated to dedicated volumes. No files on those volumes should be selected for backup. If you select an entire machine for backup, you should deselect the volumes containing storage pools.

Additional Information about Disaster Recovery of DPM

Issue #3232 can cause problems when recovering a Microsoft Data Protection Manager Server. Microsoft Data Protection Manager will create mount points from its installation directory to the disk(s) it has dedicated for storing replicas. If Microsoft Data Protection Manager is installed on the boot disk, DR will not be able to recreate those mount points. The DR process does not restore the replica data during the initial recovery process so the initial recovery will complete successfully.

Until this issue is resolved you will need to do the following between steps 2 and 3 of the “Using Disaster Recovery with the DPM Server ” process described in Appendix H of the User Guide:

A.      Remove all directories and files below C:\<DPM Install Dir>\2006\Volumes\Replica.

B.      Select My Computer > Manage > Storage > Disk Management.

C.      Delete any partitions named DPM-<Production Server Name>-<Share Name> (for example, DPM-PS1-C:\).

The final steps of the DR process will recreate the mount points for you.

Resolved Issues and Enhancements

This release contains many fixes to the CD/DVD driver, which works for CD-R, CD-RW, DVD+R, DVD+RW, DVD-R, and DVD-RW. The driver is now enabled for NetWare as well as Windows and Linux.

You can no longer append to old DVD+RW media unless you erase it first. You can use old DVD+RW media for restoring and verifying.

Some media are not directly backwards compatible. DVD-RW media are backwards compatible after an upgrade. CD-R/RW media are backwards compatible if they are imported. These compatibility issues will not affect any compatibility going forward.

Additional Information about Removable Device Support

A removable device is one of the following types of devices:

·        A fixed volume that resides on an USB or Firewire interface

·        A removable volume, such as a USB flash drive

When Yosemite Backup starts, or when a device is added or removed, Yosemite Backup scans for devices with which it can communicate. The removable device appears in the Yosemite Backup catalog, and you can use it like a tape device.

Yosemite Backup treats the device as a single logical media. The size of the media is equal to the amount of available space on the device.

You can include or exclude removable devices from backup, restore, and verify jobs. They are excluded by default. If you include removable media, any removable media that matches the device/media criteria for a backup job might be used.

Spanning is supported only on cartridge-based removable devices.

You can use removable devices for disaster recovery, but you must boot off of a CD. A USB device must be plugged into a powered USB port when the system boots. (The DR boot sequence doesn’t recognize plug and play.)

Known Issues and Limitations

Yosemite is aware of the following issues in this release. For the latest information on known issues and workarounds see www.yosemitetech.com.

Issue 803: Yosemite Backup catalog is not backed up at the end of a job

Performing a DR of a master server or a catalog restore results in a catalog that is consistent with the state of the master server midway through backup. To include all information contained within the backup, import all media in the media set.

Issue 2050: libstdc++.so.5 required

Under Red Hat Linux EL 4, it is possible to get an error trying to run Yosemite Backup.  If started from the command line, you may see an error similar to "libstdc++.so.5 could not be found" or if starting from a Window Manager such as Gnome or KDE the application just won't launch.  This is because the C++ library version that the application was built with is not present on these systems and the latest version "libstdc++.so.6" is not backwards compatible.  Red Hat provides an RPM package call "compat-libstdc++.rpm" that will install the necessary library needed by Yosemite Backup.

Issue 2739: Uninstalling via Control Panel Add/Remove

When selecting to remove the product via the Windows Add/Remove Programs Control Panel option, you are not able to select to keep the database and your Virtual Tape Library cartridge data. To remove Yosemite Backup and retain this information and your data you backed up to disk, use your product installation media, execute setup.exe in the Yosemite Backup installation directory (program directory) and select the “Remove” option.

Issue 2784: Name resolution on Netware

Even though it is possible to enter the name of the Backup Server at installation, it is recommended to enter the IP address of the Backup Server. Later you can change the DNS name by the IP address in the YTconfig.ini file.

Issue 2810: Read/write access rights are required for the file YTconfig.ini when running Yosemite Backup with a different user than installed it

In order to run the graphical user interface, you must have read/write access rights to this file located in the config directory.

Issue 2824: Microsoft SQL Server fails to restore data if Server Manager screen is open

If the Microsoft SQL Server Manager screen is open during a restore operation, Yosemite Backup will be unable to restore data to the database. Close the Server Manager screen down before running the restore job.

Issue 2881: Relogin after Catalog server restart

If the Yosemite Backup Backup Server is shut down, then restarted, the user interfaces will automatically re-login to the server. However, this may cause some error message “Error 4: Invalid Handle values” to be returned depending on the operations that you are performing. You may need to logout and log back into the Yosemite Backup Backup Server if these errors persist.

Issue 2894, 2898: Asian Translations

Simplified Chinese, and possibly other Asian translations, on Linux may have problems outputting the correct characters. This results in garbled screens and logs.

 

Issue 2829: Netware agent is not started automatically after reboot

To automatically start the NetWare agent on reboot, add the agent start command to the autoexec file. See the user guide for instructions on starting the agent.

Issue 2985, 2987:  Displaying Asian characters on Linux systems

On some Linux systems, the user interface cannot locate the default font. You may resolve this issue by passing the font to the user interface or by making an entry in the .Xresources file as shown below. The value of the “font-name” parameter must be a value returned by xlsfonts.

Method 1: Pass the font on the command line by entering:

 

cd <install dir>/v8.10 -SP3A/lin/x86

YTlingin -font "-misc-kochi gothic-medium-r-normal--0-0-0-0-c-0-koi8-r"

YTlingal -font "-misc-kochi gothic-medium-r-normal--0-0-0-0-c-0-koi8-r"

Method 2: Add the following lines to $HOME/.Xresources file:

 

YTlingin*Font:-misc-kochi gothic-medium-r-normal--0-0-0-0-c-0-koi8-r

YTlingad*Font:-misc-kochi gothic-medium-r-normal--0-0-0-0-c-0-koi8-r

 and then run:

 

xrdb -merge $HOME/.Xresources

Method 2 is preferred because it need only be done once.

Additionally, Microsoft Windows has a more complete set of Unicode fonts.  To use these fonts:

Copy selected fonts from c:\windows\fonts such as simhei.ttf, simsun.ttc, gulim.ttc, and batang.ttc and place the fonts in /usr/share/fonts

cd /usr/share/fonts

mkfontdir

ttmkfontdir -o fonts.dir

chkfontpath -add /usr/share/fonts

xlsfonts | more          and look for the new fonts

Use the new fonts as described above.

Issue 2989: Unable to install the product if un-escaped space is in the install path name

You may not be able to start the installer if an un-escaped space in the install path name is used. Move the installation directory to a directory name which does not contain a space.

Issue 3214: Seagate STT3401A IDE devices will show up as offline in NetWare.

Seagate STT3401A IDE devices do not work under NetWare. However, they work under Windows.

Issue 3232: Mount points on the boot volume fail to restore during disaster recovery

Any mount point on the boot volume fails to restore with Windows error 87: Invalid Parameter. When this happens, a folder rather than a mount point will be created and all files selected for restore under that mount point will be restored to that folder rather than to the location the mount point was originally pointing to.

Issue 3284: Linux Disaster Recovery checks for matching drive configuration

Disaster Recovery on Linux checks for compatible hard drives before proceeding with recovery.  This includes a check for the same number of physical drives, even if not mounted, as were in the system at the time of creation of Disaster Recovery media.

Issue 3434: Tape IDs might be duplicated if there is more than one HP VLS in the Yosemite Backup management domain

The HP VLS products assign tape IDs to each piece of virtual media. By default, the numbering always starts at the same point, so if there are two VLS boxes in the Yosemite Backup domain, they will create media with duplicate IDs.

Issue 3503: Some Linux systems fail to boot after DR recovery

On some systems, such as the Hewlett Packard ML110/G2, ML110/G3, and ML150G2 running Red Hat Enterprise Linux release 3 update 4 (RHEL3u4), after Disaster Recovery completes restoring, the system fails to boot.

This is a known problem of update 4 and 5, please upgrade to update 6 or higher to solve this problem

In case you need to stay with update 4 or 5 you can workaround it with this:

1.      Boot from CD1 of RHEL3.

2.      Type: linux rescue [ENTER].

3.      Answer a few questions (English, us, No network interface, Continue).

4.      At a shell prompt, type: chroot /mnt/sysimage.

5.      Then type: grub-install /dev/sda .

(Substitute /dev/sda with the first (bootable) drive.  Use /dev/hda for an IDE drive.)

6.      Remove the CD and reboot.

Issue 3506: Disaster Recovery from Split-Spanned Media

Disaster recovery from split-spanned media is currently not supported. Disaster recovery from optical devices is supported if you use restart spanning.

Issue 4104: The system fails to boot from a DVD+RW DR DVD with an error 4409, “Header not found”

Yosemite Backup reports that a DVD+RW disaster recovery DVD was created successfully, but the system does not boot from that DVD because the header information was not written correctly. Test your DVD by deleting the media in the catalog and importing it again. You can also try to boot from the DVD and stop the disaster recovery process after the system boots successfully.

Issue 4113: Agent appears to hang when starting on NetWare

Some supported CD-ROM devices do not respond properly to requests for device characteristics. In this situation, the agent will appear to hang when starting on NetWare. The request will timeout and the agent will start after two minutes.

Issue 4221: The Uninstall Program Does Not Uninstall All Files and Directories

If you run the uninstall program from the directory in which Yosemite Backup is installed, some files and directories are left behind on the machine. Instead, run the uninstall program from the Yosemite Backup CD-ROM to remove all files and directories. This issue is applicable to all supported operating systems.

Issue 4226: The GUI Installer Fails to Launch on Windows 2000 SP4

On some installations of Windows 2000 SP4, the GUI installer fails to launch. Update the system with the following hotfixes to resolve the issue:

Issue 4228: After DR on systems with SELinux enabled, some services fail to start upon reboot

After disaster recovery on systems with Security-Enhanced Linux enabled, some services fail to start upon reboot. After disaster recovery, reboot the system, then issue the following command to synchronize the security contexts for the restored files with the security definitions on the system: /sbin/fixfiles -F relabel. After the command finishes, reboot the system again.
