Yosemite Backup and Yosemite FileKeeper Corporate Overview

Total Data Protection from the Core to the Edge

Small and midsize companies depend heavily on computers and data to manage and run their businesses. Today, critical business data exists in two places: on servers at the "core" of the network and on desktops and laptops at the "edge." Strategies that are effective for protecting data at the core may not be effective at the edge, and vice versa.
Protecting data in both places is complex and challenging but failure to implement a solution that provides your business with total data protection could result in catastrophic data loss and in the worst case may even mean the failure of the business. That is why Yosemite Technologies provides Yosemite Backup for reliable Core protection and Yosemite FileKeeper Corporate for transparent continuous data protection (CDP) for the Edge. When combined, these solutions provide businesses with Total Data Protection.
Core vs. Edge
Implementing a Total Data Protection solution can be challenging because the usage model and data protection and recovery strategies for Core systems are very different from those of Edge systems.
The Core
At the Core, data protection is primarily managed by experienced IT professionals using sophisticated time-based (i.e. scheduled) solutions such as Yosemite Backup in a controlled environment to ensure data is protected and recoverable. Backup solutions copy large volumes of data using sophisticated agents to access data from proprietary databases and applications shared and used by employees. Backups of Core servers are usually done during off-hours because Core systems are always on and always connected to the network, and because the large volumes of data to be copied can cause degradation in network and Core system performance.
Yosemite Backup is a proven solution that helps deal with the challenges of protecting Core systems. Yosemite Backup is built on a reliable and flexible architecture that allows administrators to deploy only the agents and options needed to protect Core systems, proprietary databases, and applications in the most efficient way possible and at a time best-suited for the environment. This fundamental architecture has enabled Yosemite to provide reliable data protection for over 10 years with more than 2.5 million copies deployed worldwide. Regardless of the number of servers or amount of data in your environment, Yosemite Backup provides easy-to-use, robust, and reliable data protection for the Core with unmatched value.

The Edge
At the Edge, computers are often used by mobile workers and may be connected to Core systems only occasionally; they are also prone to being lost or damaged. Backups of these systems must be performed as needed, not based on a schedule. Restores must be accessible as they are needed, not only when connected to Core systems. The data protection strategies for Edge systems must be capable of operating within these constraints.
The most common method used by organizations to protect Edge data is to encourage users to manually copy their data to a Core server whenever they are in the office and connected to the network. It is assumed by the IT staff that since users work with their data every day, they know what data is important to protect.
The drawback of this approach is that most users simply don't know what data to copy or worse yet, forget to copy their data to the Core server on a regular basis. In fact, a recent poll of 2,299 adults, conducted by Harris InteractiveŽ, finds that more than a third (35 percent) of U.S. adults who have personal/professional data and digital information stored on a PC or a laptop never back up their files, and a vast majority (76 percent) of those who do back up their files don't do it often enough.
The best data protection solution for Edge systems must be:
Yosemite FileKeeper Corporate meets each of these requirements.
Yosemite FileKeeper Corporate delivers event-driven continuous data protection of user data, efficiently stores copies of user data in a unique location on the user's system as well as on a Core server, reduces both storage and network impact by copying and storing only the changes to a file, and allows the user to perform their own recoveries via intuitive right-click menus accessible from a number of places on the user's system and independent of network connection status. Finally, to ensure corporate data protection policies are adhered to, everything can be controlled by an administrator via the FileKeeper Policy Server.
The table below demonstrates how Yosemite FileKeeper Corporate, the ideal data protection solution for the Edge, addresses the challenges unique to Edge systems:
Edge Protection - Challenges FileKeeper Corporate Advantage
Inconsistent network connectivity Copies of files are saved and recoverable regardless of network connection
Users must remember to copy their files Copies are made transparently every time the user saves their work
Data protection and recovery must be done by end users without increased training costs Copies are made transparently every time the user saves their work, and recoveries are done via simple right-click menus within the context of the user's environment
User-initiated file copying causes spikes in network traffic File protection is continuous, only changes to a file are transmitted, and whenever possible, files are recovered from the local cache and not the network
Requires administrators to help restore Users initiate their own recoveries via right-click menus in Explorer and the applications themselves
Users do not always know what data to protect Data protection and retention policies can be defined and controlled by administrators and distributed to clients automatically
User needs to refer to a previous version of a file FileKeeper Corporate, through its intuitive right-click interface, displays previous versions of files and allows the user to open and view them with a single click
Yosemite FileKeeper Corporate meets all the requirements of protecting Edge data. User files are protected every time they save their work, each file and changes to a file is saved locally on the user's disk as well as on a Core server for an extra layer of protection, and files are recoverable without the aid of an IT administrator through FileKeeper's intuitive, right-click menus.

Total Data Protection
Total Data Protection for a business means data protection from the Core to the Edge. Core systems are still the heart of a business, running critical business applications and storing data in powerful centralized databases. But most businesses today also employ tools on user's desktops and laptops to increase employee productivity and effectiveness. These laptops and desktops are at the Edge of the business, in uncontrolled environments and vulnerable to loss or damage.
For Core protection, Yosemite Backup provides:
For Edge protection, Yosemite FileKeeper Corporate provides:
Protecting data from the Core to the Edge is a challenging task due to diverse requirements, usage models and data retention policies. Yosemite Technologies recognizes these unique challenges and delivers not only solutions that address both Core and Edge but also solutions that work well together -Yosemite FileKeeper Corporate continuously protects Edge data by efficiently copying it to the Core where Yosemite Backup can quickly and easily backup the data to tape for disaster protection. When combined Yosemite Backup and Yosemite FileKeeper Corporate provides customers with a true Total Data Protection solution from the Core to the Edge.
