| Yosemite Backup Advanced FAQs | |
| 01. | What are the system requirements for Yosemite Backup Advanced? |
|
|
| 02. | What are the most significant changes between Yosemite Backup Standard 7.0 and Yosemite Backup Advanced? |
| Backing up to/from disk devices and virtual tape libraries. NAS/SAN support and D2D2Ne. Flexible job scheduling/media rotation. Yosemite Backup Advanced supports backups that span two or more media. This can happen when the amount of data being backed up exceeds the capacity of a single media. Yosemite Backup supports two spanning modes: restart spanning and split spanning. | |
| 03. | What is a flexible media rotation? |
| Jobs can be scheduled to run as frequently as every minute or as infrequently as only once or on demand. Media rotation schemes let you determine the best method for re-using media. You can re-use media as frequently as each day or as seldom as once a year. You determine how long you want to retain data on your media. | |
| 04. | What is a Virtual Library? |
| A Virtual Library emulates a physical tape library. A Virtual Library can include one or more emulated tape drives, storage slots in which to store virtual media, and emulated robotics to load and unload virtual media. | |
| 05. | How do I configure a Virtual Library? |
|
1. Select Wizards from the Favorites desk bar.
2. Run the D2D Device wizard and click Next to proceed through the screens of the wizard.
3. When prompted to do so, name the Virtual Library or you may accept the default name.
4. On the Configuration page, set up the Virtual Library as follows:
5. Click Finish once you have completed the wizard.
|
|
| 06. | Can the GUI be modified by the end user? |
| Yes. Yosemite Backup Advanced provides several options for customizing the user interface. Instructions for customizing the GUI are located in the Yosemite Backup Advanced User's Guide and Technical Reference. | |
| 07. | Does Yosemite Backup Advanced support tape-to-tape copying? |
| Yes. You can create extra sets of backup media. You might use these extra sets of media as redundant backups for offsite storage. You can create duplicates of your media any time, or you can schedule a job to occur at regular intervals. To prepare duplicate backup media, use the Copy Media wizard from the Favorites desk bar to select the source and destination media and schedule the job. | |
| 08. | How do I perform a disk-to-disk backup? |
| Yosemite Backup Advanced supports advanced disk-to-disk (D2D) backups through the use of a Virtual Library. A Virtual Library emulates a physical tape library. To set up a disk-to-disk backup job first create a Virtual Library and then configure your backup job to use it instead of other physical devices. | |
| 09. | How does disk-to-disk (D2D) differ from disk-to-disk-to-any (D2D2Ne)? |
| D2D allows you to backup to a virtual library. D2D2Ne allows a user to backup to disk and specify whether or not (through copy policy) information from that disk will be copied to another disk or tape. If you have a D2D2Ne license, you may set up a copy policy for the Virtual Library. A copy policy determines whether or not the backups stored on virtual media will be copied to other devices. | |
| 10. | Does Yosemite Backup Advanced support NAS and SAN? |
| Yes. To share devices on a SAN requires that you purchase SAN Media Server licenses for every server that must utilize the shared devices in the SAN. By default, Yosemite Backup Advanced backup jobs automatically select devices to use based on their availability (whether or not they are in use). In a SAN environment, Yosemite Backup Advanced automatically recognizes that a single backup device attached to a SAN may be accessible from two or more servers, and treats the device as a single device. | |
| 11. | Will NetWare, Linux and UNIX be supported in Yosemite Backup Advanced? |
| Yes. Yosemite Backup Advanced supports only Microsoft Windows operating systems at this time. Please refer to our web site for updates: www.yosemitetech.com. | |
| 12. | Does Yosemite Backup Advanced support network printing? |
|
Yes.
1. Add a new printer from the Windows Start menu. For example, in Windows XP, select Printers and Faxes on the Start menu, then select Add a printer.
2. Working through the printer wizard, create a local printer.
3. On the Select a Printer Port screen, select FILE (Print to File).
4. On the Install Printer Software screen, select Generic for the manufacturer and Generic/Text only for the printer.
5. On the Name Your Printer screen, select a unique name for this printer so that it is easy to identify in Yosemite Backup Advanced.
6. Do not use this printer as your default printer.
7. Continue through the wizard until the printer is created and accept any remaining default settings.
The printer is ready for use in Yosemite Backup Advanced. |
|
| 13. | Can I backup my network/enterprise in Yosemite Backup Advanced? |
| Yes. With appropriate licensing, Yosemite Backup Advanced will back up your entire network. | |
| 14. | What is the best source for current Yosemite Backup Advanced documentation (URL or reference)? |
| Yosemite Backup Advanced installs printable electronic documents onto your computer. You can access them directly from the Start menu: Start, Programs, Yosemite Backup Advanced, Yosemite Backup Advanced Documentation, <document name>. Refer to the Windows Start menu created for Yosemite Backup Advanced to locate these documents. On-line help is forthcoming. | |
| 15. | What ports does Yosemite Backup Advanced use for communications, and will there be a problem with firewalls? |
|
Yosemite Backup Advanced uses TCP/IP for communications over port 3817 (knowledge base TID 1376)
You will need to configure your firewall as follows:
1. Select Start>Run>firewall.cpl (this will bring up the firewall properties window)
NOTE: In some instances it may be necessary to shut down the Windows Firewall
during the initial installation of Yosemite Backup to allow the clients to join
the zone.
2. Select the Exceptions Tab, and select "Add Program" 3. You will need to make the following exemptions: a. In all cases port 3817 must be exempted. b. If you are running Yosemite Backup as a service: i. C:\Program Files\Yosemite\Yosemite Backup\v8.00\win\x86\ytwinsdr.exe c. If you are running the Yosemite Backup GUI: i. C:\Program Files\Yosemite\Yosemite Backup\v8.00\win\x86\ytwingad.exe ii. C:\Program Files\Yosemite\Yosemite Backup\ytadmin.exe d. If you are running the CUI: i. C:\Program Files\Yosemite\Yosemite Backup\ytwincui.exe 4. Close the Firewall Properties window. 5. You may need to disable the Firewall during the initial installation of Yosemite Backup. |
|
| 16. | Does Yosemite Backup Advanced support Volume Shadow-copy Service (VSS)? |

| 19. | What information should I have before calling technical support? |
| Please have the operating system information (version and service or support pack) backup job log(s), the version and service pack number for the product in question, your license information, and a complete description of the issue at hand. | |
| Yosemite Backup Standard FAQs | |
| 01. | What are the limitations of Yosemite Backup Unlimited Bundles? |
The Unlimited Bundles are available on a per-platform basis or all platforms in the case of Universal Unlimited. The only limitations are:
|
|
| 02. | Can I restore data with a different file name? |
| Yes. When the file, directory, or volume to be renamed is selected in the “Selection” tab of your restore job, right-click on it and choose “Rename” from the menu. When you run the restore job, the file, directory, or volume will be restored to the chosen location with the new name. This is useful if you do not want to overwrite an existing file, directory, or volume with the same name. | |
| 03. | Can I restore data to another location? |
| Yes. There are two ways to accomplish this task in a restore job. One, after selecting what you want to restore, click on a selected file or directory, hold the mouse button down and drag the object to the desired location in the selection list. Two, make your selection(s) in the selection list of your restore job, then right-click on the file or directory you want to restore to a different location and select “Move…”. Click the Browse button to browse to the restore location and click “OK”. Confirm the move by clicking “OK” again in the “Confirm Move” window. | |
| 04. | How can I restore files that were backed up on a particular date? |
| On the “Selection” tab of the restore job, highlight the file, directory or volume you wish to restore (do not put a check mark next to the object; just highlight it by clicking on the object name). Go to the toolbar and click on the “Select Instance” button (small box with a check mark). The Select Instance dialog box appears. Select the instance you want to restore: all instances available will be listed by date and by the name of the media on which the instance is stored. After selecting the instance, click on the “OK” button. Backup Standard automatically checks the selection box next to the object. If you select the instance of a directory, all sub-directories and files under the root directory will also have the particular instance selected. | |
| 05. | How can I determine which files are on a tape? |
| Click on “Media Content” on the Wizards tab, highlight the media you wish to view and click “Next”. A media content window will open displaying a complete listing of the media contents. Another way to view a catalog of a media is to open the “Media” tab, locate the media you want to view and double-click on it. A media content window will then appear and list the content of that particular media. | |
| 06. | Can I allow users to access Backup Standard? |
| Yes. The security features within Backup Standard allow shared access to resources like devices, loaders, and media. You can setup Backup Standard security so that users can make their own backup or restore jobs, to or from the tape devices you allow. Backup Standard can also be setup so that the administrator can be in charge of the backups, but grant sufficient security rights so the users can restore their own data. | |
| 07. | Do I have to login to Backup Standard to run a scheduled job? |
| No. Backup Standard will run its scheduled jobs as long as the Backup Standard service was installed and is running (no need to login) or if the Backup Standard Administrator is open (a user must log in to open the Backup Standard Administrator). Note: Backup Standard runs as a member of the System user group on Windows NT, 2000, XP, and 2003. If you have changed Windows security properties for the System user group, or have installed certain Microsoft security patches, you might need to modify the properties of the Backup Standard service and change the login account to that of the administrator. | |
| 08. | How Can I determine which files were not backed up? |
| Open the Backup Standard Administrator, click on the “Backup” tab, right-click on the backup job, select “Properties”, and click on the “Logs” tab. Select the date of the backup job in question, and click on “View” or “Print”. As long as you have selected “Log only failed” or “Log all” on the “Options” tab of that job, failed files will be listed in the details section of the log. You can also view or print logs by selecting the “Instructions and Logs” icon on the “Wizard” tab (this shows a global list of all logs, from all jobs). | |
| 09. | Can I print the reports or logs from the NetWare OS? |
| Yes. You can print to any local print queue from the NetWare OS. The queue must be local, but the printer does not need to be local. By configuring a remote print server to service the local print queue, the print job can be routed to a remote printer. | |
| 10. | Can I use a tape device located on other computers located in a Backup Standard Zone? |
| Yes, with the proper licensing. If you are using a Backup Basic or XD version that came with your tape device, you are only allowed to back up to a local tape device or autoloader. For information about upgrading your Backup Standard version, please contact sales or visit the product information section of our web site at the following web address: www.yosemitetech.com/products. | |
| 11. | When I install Backup Standard on a client machine, I do not see the Backup Standard Master Server (Storage Manager). |
|
The most common reason for not being able to see the Backup Standard Master Server from
a client machine is that the machine in question is on a different subnet than
the Master Server. During installation, you click the “Add” button on the
“Host” screen and enter the IP address or subnet of the Master Server. For
NetWare or Linux installations, enter the IP address or subnet by clicking the
Insert key.
A firewall can also interfere with communication between Backup Standard and the Master
Server. Make sure that any firewall that you are running is not blocking the
following UDP ports: 58594, 58595, 58084 and 58085.
Multiple network cards installed on a machine can also interfere with
communication between Backup Standard and the Master Server. You might need to disable
one of the cards while installing Backup Standard. For more information regarding
this, please click on the following link:

|
|
| 12. | Can Backup Standard perform cross-platform/cross-file system backup and restore jobs? |
| Yes, so long as you deselect the “native data stream format” in the Advanced options section on the “Options” tab of the properties of the backup job. You must do this prior to running the backup job and backing up the files. | |
| 13. | What versions of Backup Standard are currently supported? |
| All customers have access to free web-based support for Backup Standard 6.3and subsequent versions on the Technical Support web site. Phone support is provided for Backup Standard version 7.0 only. We ask that you install the latest service pack for your version of Backup Standard before contacting Technical Support. The latest service packs are available for download at: www.yosemitetech.com/servicepacks. If you have a version of Backup Standard older than 6.3 you will need to upgrade Backup Standard to a newer version before receiving support. To purchase an upgrade, visit our web site or contact sales. | |
| 14. | Where can I get documentation for my Backup Standard product? |
| You can find your Backup Standard documentation in the Backup Standard installation directory on your hard drive. The documentation is provided in PDF format, for which you will need Adobe Acrobat Reader. Adobe Acrobat Reader is included on your Backup Standard CD or can be downloaded from: www.adobe.com. For the latest documentation in PDF format, you can download them here: www.yosemitetech.com/support/docsearch.aspx. To purchase printed manuals, please contact Yosemite Technologies or your Backup Standard reseller. | |
