The Hampden Group is a privately owned group of companies operating in the financial and legal sectors. Hampden Private Capital, part of the Hampden Group, is a financial services company. They needed to address the mounting data flow in the company and a means to effectively protect data. Individuals and companies trust Hampden with their financials but also the personal data for all its transactions. Loss of data in this field could prove a critical blow to a business or individual and cause major fallout for Hampden. Pursuing a sound data protection strategy was paramount as Hampden began its search for a backup solution.

The company began looking at several backup products including Veritas, CA and Yosemite. The goal was to create a comprehensive, heterogeneous solution for backup and recovery for their locations that was both easy to use and cost effective.

Yosemite provided Hampden with a solution that met their data protection needs, proving highly cost effective, without introducing unwanted complexity to their environment. Yosemite TapeWare provided a simple, reliable, automated solution for Hampden’s mix of Novell NetWare, Windows and Linux servers. The Yosemite solution introduced a flexible solution giving the IT team an easy interface to manage its multi-OS environment reducing training cost and, thus, overall TCO (total cost of ownership).

After reviewing other products, including Veritas Backup Exec and Computer Associates ArcServe, Yosemite TapeWare was selected for its flexibility and simplicity.

Hampden Private Capital is now protecting approximately 160Gb of data daily with the Yosemite solution combined with HP Ultrium LTO1 tape drives.

The data being protected by Yosemite TapeWare is core information needed for Hampden’s day-to-day operations. Andrew Hough, Technical Director at Hampden Private Capital said, "We have had cause to restore some of these data sets over the last year, and Yosemite has enabled us to recover very quickly." Yosemite TapeWare also ensures adherence to data retention policies and regulations. The Novell GroupWise system is being backed up through the Open File Backup Option for Yosemite TapeWare. Open File Backup Option ensures a complete backup of data, by capturing any files that are held open by a user or application. In addition Yosemite also provides Agents to backup Microsoft SQL Server, Microsoft Exchange and Oracle databases.

Hampden also enjoyed full cross platform support, including the ability to move data easily from one platform to another by configuring a restore job to move data without 'native stream' information. Yosemite products can be hosted on any combination of Microsoft Windows, Novell NetWare, Linux or Sun Solaris, unlike other products which only have a client for backing up platforms other than MS Windows.

Bare Metal Disaster Recovery decreases downtime and eliminates the manual recovery of operating system and applications. Through the use of bootable media such as CD of floppy disk, Yosemite TapeWare can quickly and easily restore complete Windows, Linux or NetWare system with a local tape device back to the point of your last backup.
