Simplicity, cost and compatibility - key to a scalable solution
“Compatibility with multiple OS's was a determining factor”
Compass Group is the world's largest food service company, with food service revenues exceeding €20bn. Compass Group-Germany, provides catering services for business, and is headquartered in Eschborn, Germany with offices in 14 other locations and more than 8000 employees. A longtime Tapeware user, Compass Group Germany considered a number of options before selecting Yosemite Backup 8.1 to upgrade a 27-server, local and remote network.
Challenges
Compass Group had a number of specific challenges in evaluating candidates to upgrade its environment. While the bulk of its environment was IBM/SUSE Linux-based, the backup requirements included several Windows NT/2000 servers. Thus, multiplatform support was an imperative.
Moreover, the environment included multiple storage types, including hardware-RAID, software-RAID, NAS and iSCSI installations.
"Yosemite was selected for three reasons. First, they provided a competitive solution at a very fair price. Second, the high level of compatibility with Tapeware gave us confidence in the technology. And, finally, the simplicity of the installation and configuration reduced our downtime to a minimum."
Finally, multiple databases and applications, including Microsoft SQL, Oracle, Postgres and Lotus Notes were in the backup mix.
Solution
Working with Yosemite's authorized reseller, LSK Storage of Dieburg / Germany, and Yosemite Technologies sales team, Compass selected Yosemite Backup Advanced 8.1 as their backup architecture. The implemented solution consisted of a Master Server, one Media Server, 25 client servers, and two each of Yosemite's SQL agents and Oracle agents. This solution provided backup for both local and remote storage, a total of 15 separate sites.
"Yosemite was selected for three reasons," said Horst Spross, Systems Administrator for Compass-Group, "First, they provided a competitive solution at a very fair price. Second, the high level of compatibility with Tapeware gave us confidence in the technology. And, finally, the simplicity of the installation and configuration reduced our downtime to a minimum." In addition, Compass-Group found the ease of use of the GUI to be a strong point in Yosemite's favor. The compatibility with Compass's multiple-OS environment was also a deciding factor. Moreover, the new D2D2Ne (disk-to-disk-to Any) feature of Yosemite Backup 8.1 provided the flexibility to expand the sophistication of their backup strategy in the future.
Benefits
Compass reaped significant benefits from its new backup software solution. First, the new solution cost less than any of the alternatives.
Second, the simplicity of the solution, from installation to configuration to the operation of the GUI, provides Compass with a backup solution that meets current needs, plus the flexibility to scale with tier business in the future.
