This article quickly reviews the disk-versus-tape debate, examines simple disk backup’s pros and cons, and proposes the virtual tape library (VTL) using disk as the backup medium as the best replacement for traditional tape backup. Finally, it discusses why all VTLs are not created equal and what to look for in a VTL when considering one for enterprise tape backup replacement.

IDC estimates that at the beginning of 2006, there were 8.1 million small and medium-sized
businesses (SMBs . firms with under 1,000 employees) in the United States. In the past several
years, their IT spending has grown at a faster rate than larger enterprises’, and IDC expects this trend
to continue. Of particular interest is the adoption of advanced storage solutions specifically designed
and priced for SMBs.
The following questions were posed by Yosemite Technologies to Ray Boggs, Vice President of
IDC’s Small/Medium Business and Home Office research, on behalf of Yosemite’s SMB customers.
