Implementing a Storage Area Network (SAN) to centralize and share storage resources is a great way to optimize disk and tape storage. With the Yosemite Backup SAN Media Server option, you can directly backup a server to any tape library or removable media resource attached to a SAN. The SAN Media server performs all of the same functions as a Yosemite Backup Media Server.
The benefit to implementing the SAN Media Server option is twofold. One is that all of the tape and tape library resources in the SAN become “dynamic” resources to all of the SAN Media Servers. This means that backup windows will shrink because each server has access to more resources than if they were statically connected. The second benefit is that by being able to share tape and tape library resources in the SAN, the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) for backup is lowered.
